We stayed 1 night in Granada - I wish we had more time. We only had time for Alhambra and so glad we managed to squeeze in our visit to the caves in Granada before leaving. We walked up the steep hill to see the caves where the gypsies lived many years ago. Beautiful views of the Alhambra below. Entrance fee is 5 euros. It was so interesting and other worldly to see these cave homes and look into the history of Sacramonte and the gypsies. Each cave has its own topic, from daily life to the origins of Flamenco. This was one of the highlights of our tour to Spain.

I’d say this is the next best thing you can visit in Granada. It’s great to see the way gitanos had the live after being thrown out of the city. The museum is one of the few examples of what the caves looked like originally. The cave that covered the history of flamenco was also very interesting and they have a movie playing there with old footage of the shows. Definitely worth the climb and the 5 euro. The view of the Alhambra was very nice as well.

While staying at an airbnb cave rental in Sacromonte we visited at the end of our trip and I'm so glad we did. Fascinating exhibits in a series of caves on local gypsy history, the local plants, rocks, animals, and ecology, the origins of Flamenco, and, at the end, global cave cultures. Each room is just the right amount of info to read along with exhibit artifacts. Staff was very warm and the cafe has snacks and beer on tap for a nice break in the middle in a beautiful setting. Honestly, after visiting many galleries and tourist museums over the last week in Barcelona and Granada, this was refreshingly human, down to earth and not an exhausting amount of info and space to cover. I think this museum will end up staying with me more than many of the big official places we went which I also enjoyed but seem less special.

At the top of a hill, facing the magnificent views of Alhambra - there lies this small and unique museum. The entrance fee is 5 euros, for which you can enjoy a stroll between the caves and look into the history of Sacramonte history and the Gipsy community background. Each cave us dedicated to a different topic, from everyday life to the origins of Flamenco, and you can find information in Spanish and English at their entrances. At the entrance you can also buy some water and snacks, and grab a table under the sun to sit and share your experiences from this unique museum
